
Start with the application
A roof panel, external wall, cold-room panel and internal partition have different loads and performance requirements. Thickness should be selected for the complete application rather than copied from another project.
Thermal performance
The core material and declared conductivity influence the insulation value. PUF and PIR generally provide higher thermal resistance at lower thickness than EPS, while rockwool is often considered where fire and acoustic performance are stronger priorities. Use approved manufacturer data for calculations.
Structural span
Panel profile, steel facing thickness, support spacing, wind pressure, suction, roof access and fixing pattern affect allowable span. Review span tables and project loads before finalizing purlin or girt spacing.
Fire and acoustic requirements
Performance belongs to the complete tested assembly, not only the core. Joints, fasteners, supports, openings and service penetrations can influence the result.
Moisture and joint detailing
Panel orientation, sealant, flashing, vapour control, ridge, barge, gutter and opening interfaces are essential. A thicker panel does not compensate for poor joint or drainage details.
